Android Apps worth a look!

I wanted to share some of my favorite Android applications that have made it to my smartphones homescreen. I’ll try to make this a regular feature and highlight apps you might not have noticed that are worth a look:

Spare Phone: Spare Phone formerly gVoice is a $1.99 Android VoIP app developed by guidology that allows you to use your data connection (WiFi, 3G, 4G,EVDO) to place voice calls using a Google Voice Account. gVoice essentially turns your phone or tablet into a free wireless phone when using the application over WiFi.

Plume: Plume formerly Touiteur is highly customizable Twitter client that has many desirable features including the ability to colorize your timeline, pull to refresh your timeline, handle multiple twitter accounts, picture preview, autocomplete Twitter hashtags, the ability to mute select users and much more it is my current Twitter client of choice. There is a free ad-supported version of Plume as well as a premium ad-free version of Plume available for $4.99.

Nook Color updated to V1.4.1 featuring over 100 enhancements including Netflix support.

Barnes and Noble recently released a firmware update V1.4.1 for the Nook Color that touts over 100 enhancements, including reading Nook books in portrait and landscape modes, direct look-up of words in the built-in dictionary, increased font selection and more.

Other new features and enhancements include:

  • Access to popular movies and TV shows streamed through Netflix
  • NOOK Comics including a large collection of Marvel graphic novels
  • PagePerfect NOOK Books – a whole new category of NOOK Books including select multi-media features

The software update is scheduled to be rolled out over the next week and will automatically install when the device is idle. Once the update has been installed, you’ll see a small green “n” on the left side of the status bar.

Electronics gifts don’t have to be budget-busters

Despite the downturn in the economy, early polling indicates that a majority of consumers — 52 percent — plan to spend the same or more for gifts this holiday season, according to a recent ICM Research report.

Last year, nearly a third of U.S. consumers’ holiday gift-spending budget went to consumer electronics.

I don’t know who the folks are that participated in the ICM poll, but most of my friends and associates have a more conservative budget this holiday season. Keeping in mind that many of us will need to spend less, I wanted to share my picks for hot tech gifts that won’t break the bank or your budget. Happy Holidays!

Shopping choices get easier

Expect to see big crowds out shopping for e-readers or tablet computers this holiday season.

The flurry of product announcements from Apple, Amazon and Barnes & Noble is revving customer interest in devices that already are hot sellers.

I get asked all of the time for recommendations for both e-readers and tablets.

My answer usually begins with at least two additional questions:

What do you want to do with it?

How much money do you want to spend?

Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, borrow books for free including bestsellers with no due dates

Amazon recently introduced the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library that allows Amazon prime members who own a Kindle device to borrow from over 5,000 titles, including 100 current and former New York Times Bestsellers, as frequently as a book a month, for free with no due dates.

There are just two requirements in order to use the lending library, own a Kindle device (does not work on the Kindle app) and be an Amazon Prime member which also entitles you to free two-day shipping on Amazon stocked items as well as unlimited streaming of a growing library of movies and TV shows.

Apple to launch iCloud on October 12

Breakthrough set of free cloud services includes iTunes in the Cloud, Photo Stream and Documents in the Cloud

Apple has announced that iCloud, a breakthrough set of free cloud services, including iTunes in the Cloud, Photo Stream and Documents in the Cloud, that work seamlessly with your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC to automatically and wirelessly store your content in iCloud and push it to all your devices, will be available on October 12.

iCloud stores your music, photos, apps, contacts, calendars, documents and more, keeping them up to date across all your devices. When content changes on one device, all your other devices are updated automatically and wirelessly.
