Believe it: Smartphones about to get even smarter

by George Heymann | @techeadlines

Special to the Chieftain

There are now more than 100 million smartphone users in the United States, according to the latest comScore report.

But even as smartphone use increases, the devices are undergoing dramatic — and speedy —evolution. Here’s a look at several prominent mobile trends that are emerging:

  • Smartphones are featuring ever-faster processors, Dual-core processors once reserved for the latest super phones are now standard fare on many smartphones. By the end of 2012, manufacturers will need to include a quad-core processor to be considered a high-end mobile device.
  • Large, high-resolution touchscreens are also in high demand on the latest smartphones and tablets. Not long ago, a 4-inch screen on a smartphone was considered large; today, 4-inch-plus screens are fairly common, with a couple of models topping 5 inches and featuring high-resolution, 1280 x 800 pixel displays. T-Mobile officially launches the HTC Sensation

by George Heymann

techeadlines@gmail.com

HTC officially launched its latest Android super phone, the HTC Sensation on T-Mobile today . The phone is very stylish, thin and relatively compact considering the phone features a 4.3” qHD (540×960) pixel display.

In the brief time I had with the 1.2 GHZ dual-core processor equipped handset it handled all of the applications and functions well. Menu screens snapped open, and applications loaded very quickly. The phone comes with Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 OS installed as well as the latest version of HTC Sense 3.0 overlay.

by George Heymann

There is a lot to like about Dell’s 7-inch WiFi Android tablet. The Dell Streak 7 is a good performer: it packs an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and 16 GB of Internal Storage with support for up 32GB of additional storage via its memory card slot. It also features 5MP rear camera with flash as well as a 1.3 MP front-facing camera for video chatting. The tablet also includes Wifi 802.11 b/g/n and supports Bluetooth 2.1. At $399, it is relatively inexpensive.

T-mobile LG G2X Gingerbread update: Outed early

The good folks at thisismynext.com got treated to an early preview of what appears to be a near final build of the official Gingerbread Android OS 2.3.3 build for the T-mobile LG G2X.

Improvements noted in the preview:

  • Improved performance: Quadrant score of 2435 up from 2100/2200 in Froyo.
  • Scrolling and touch sensitivity improved
  • Enhanced Gingerbread Keyboard
  • Revamped Gingerbread UI
  • WiFi calling feature in tact

The review also noted that the build reverted back to the stock Gingerbread photo application instead of the enhanced app provided by LG in the stock Android OS 2.2 build.

T-Mobile had tweeted earlier that the Gingerbread updated would be coming soon; it looks like we won’t have to wait long.

by George Heymann

I ran across this Logic Buy Deal which expires today for $299 (after factoring in the $100 gift card) thought it was a fantastic value, too good to pass up. I love the performance of the Nvidia Tegra platform. So I’m willing to roll the dice on the rumored Honeycomb update.

The Dell Streak 7 is powered by Nvidia Tegra T20 Dual Core processor (1GHz) and Android OS 2.2 Froyo and features WiFi, Bluetooth, 16GB storage, 1.3MP front and 5MP rear facing cameras, Adobe Flash 10.1 and more. (Look for our review soon)

T-Mobile LG G2X Review

by George Heymann

techeadlines@gmail.com

The T-Mobile LG G2x is my first LG phone of any type, Smart or other wise. It’s the first dual-core phone offering available for T-Mobile’s USA Network. Even though it’s my first LG phone, my previous experience with the company’s other products was favorable, making the decision to purchase the G2X an easy one given the phones other great features.
