Preview: Droid RAZR MAXX, Sony Xperia S, Samsung Attain 4G, LG Connect 4G

Smartphone Briefs

By Chris Coleman|@PhoneKnack

With all the excitement surrounding the new phones that were displayed at CES by various companies, the Droid RAZR MAXX easily got lost in the mix. For all those heavy smartphone users who are tired of their phone battery’s not being able to keep up with the heavy demands of constant usage, the RAZR MAXX is for you. Armed with a battery that allows for users to talk for over 21 hours on a single charge, this phone may be the savior for many.

The Droid RAZR MAXX has the same specs as the Droid RAZR, and is still incredibly thin measuring in at 8.99 mm. The Droid RAZR MAXX comes with 32 GB of total memory and can be yours for $299.99 on a new two-year contract with Verizon.

Sony has quietly introduced the Sony Xperia S to CES 2012 to showcase all of its beauty. The Xperia features a monster 4.3-inch screen but oddly enough the phone is very thin, similar to the Droid RAZR. There are three white dots that line up with the home, menu, and back button. The dots correspond as buttons for each function, making the actually icons unaccessible.

LG announces its initial Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade roadmap

LG announced its preliminary roadmap today for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) upgrades on its Facebook page  for high-end LG smartphones which were introduced earlier this year.

The initial handsets include: the Optimus 2X, Optimus Black, Optimus 3D and the Optimus LTE. The LG post explains that they are continuing to evaluate the performance of other LG smartphones to make ICS OS available on as many LG smartphones as possible.

LG is promising to update its Facebook again in December with its planned upgrade schedule and additional specific models that will be eligible for the ICS upgrade. Although they did not specifically state it, I expect that carrier specific variants of the already announced models will also be included, for example the LG G2x, the T-Mobile version of the Optimus 2X should be supported.

Tablet shipments to reach 253m by 2016 as new vendors converge on sector, says Juniper Research

by Anna Schmidt

Technology Market

A new report by analyst firm Juniper Research forecasts that tablet shipments will reach 253 million by 2016, nearly a five-fold increase from the 55.2 million tablets the company expects to reach the market in 2011.

With a second generation of Apple’s iPad hitting the market earlier this year, other smartphone vendors have followed suit: HTC, LG, Motorola and RIM launched first generation models in 2011. As other opportunities elsewhere in the PC market diminish, leading players from this space – including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Toshiba – are also joining the fray.

T-mobile LG G2X Gingerbread update: Outed early

The good folks at thisismynext.com got treated to an early preview of what appears to be a near final build of the official Gingerbread Android OS 2.3.3 build for the T-mobile LG G2X.

Improvements noted in the preview:

  • Improved performance: Quadrant score of 2435 up from 2100/2200 in Froyo.
  • Scrolling and touch sensitivity improved
  • Enhanced Gingerbread Keyboard
  • Revamped Gingerbread UI
  • WiFi calling feature in tact

The review also noted that the build reverted back to the stock Gingerbread photo application instead of the enhanced app provided by LG in the stock Android OS 2.2 build.

T-Mobile had tweeted earlier that the Gingerbread updated would be coming soon; it looks like we won’t have to wait long.

T-Mobile LG G2X Review

by George Heymann

techeadlines@gmail.com

The T-Mobile LG G2x is my first LG phone of any type, Smart or other wise. It’s the first dual-core phone offering available for T-Mobile’s USA Network. Even though it’s my first LG phone, my previous experience with the company’s other products was favorable, making the decision to purchase the G2X an easy one given the phones other great features.
