3.7M Android Devices Activated on 12/24 and 12/25

By George Heymann|@techeadlines

About a week ago Googles Senior Vice President of Mobile Andy Rubin tweeted that 700,000 Android devices are activated every day. He followed up that tweet with another today informing us that an astonishing 3.7 million Android devices were activated on 12/24 and 12/25.

From those numbers it appears that for many it was a very green (robot) Christmas. Every time I see the latest Android numbers I think to myself this is it, the Android Platform has peaked, well at least till Google releases its next set of Android numbers.

The numbers released today in combination with the announcement earlier in the month that the Android Market had reached the 10 billion download milestone further emphasizes the tremendous momentum behind the Android platform.

Did you give or receive an Android Smartphone or Tablet for Christmas?

What are the most popular Android apps? Unsurprisingly the majority are Google properties according to Nielsen report.

by George Heymann

Nielsen released a report today that analyzes Android app usage for the past 30 days. Nielsen broke down the usage data gathered from its proprietary software installed on thousands of consumer phones who agreed to be part of Nilsen’s ongoing smartphone research.

Unsurprisingly five out the top six Android applications were Google properties, with Facebook being the notable exception across all three reported age categories. I say unsurprisingly from looking at my own “most frequently used” apps list.

Personally my top five Android apps are:

  1. Google Voice
  2. Gmail
  3. Browser
  4. Google Search
  5. Android Market

Rounding out my most used list is Dropbox, KeePass Droid, PandoraDoggCatcher and Amazon AppStore. What are your most frequently used apps? How do they compare to the Nielsen List?

by A. Montaqim

Technology Market

Game Insight, one of the world’s leaders in mobile and social games making, announced today that their iPad version of the game “My Country” has maintained the #1 position in Top Grossing Games apps for iPad and earned over $300,000 during the first two and a half weeks of being live in the AppStore. “My Country” has repeated the success for its Android twin-sister, which has also kept top position in the Top Grossing list for over 2 months.

With “My Country”, Game Insight continues to dominate the free-to-play mobile games market by reaching #1 position once more on the top grossing app chart. Though “My Country” had to compete for its place as #1 against other popular games for iPad, the top was achieved by earning over $300,000 during the first two and a half weeks of being live.

Game Insight prides itself for the achievements of the past several weeks, despite the fact that the success of “My Country” did not come as a surprise. Game Insight is confident in their creation of another worthy game that brings city-building games to the next level of user entertainment.

by John Roberts

Apple has announced it has sold over four million of its new iPhone 4S, just three days after its launch on October 14. In addition, more than 25 million customers are already using iOS 5 in the first five days of its release, and more than 20 million customers have signed up for iCloud, a breakthrough set of free cloud services that automatically and wirelessly store your content in iCloud and push it to all your devices. iPhone 4S is available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK, and will be available in 22 more countries on October 28 and more than 70 countries by the end of the year.

“iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend—the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “iPhone 4S is a hit with customers around the world, and together with iOS 5 and iCloud, is the best iPhone ever.”

Technology-Headlines Android app, offers an easy way to read along when you’re mobile

by George Heymann

Click to Download

After experiencing intermittent problems with our Android app, were back to using AppsGeyser to publish our application.

The app offers a very simple, easy to read layout which looks very similar to the WordPress application for Android. (see sample screens on the right)

The app lets you choose between two basic settings, mobile or full site mode. The

mobile setting is my favorite, it gives you the headlines for each story,  which you can then click to read the stories that are of interest. It makes it really easy to scan for new content and read with just a quick tap.

The full site mode, is a desktop browser like view of our site. If you have an Android phone with OS 2.1 or higher and want an easy way to follow us when your mobile give it a try, it’s a free download from the Android Market.

Does Google want Motorola only for its patents, or is there something else?

by John Roberts

Technology Market

Google‘s decision to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion is seen by many as the search giant’s attempt to get its hands on thousands of valuable patents. But is there another reason?

Motorola Mobility currently holds some 17,000 patents and has another 7,500 pending – all of which will be Google‘s to play with once the deal goes through.

However, Google‘s decision could also be a sign that Internet company is determined to establish itself in the smartphone market.

Preview: CooTeks TouchPal keyboard adds another great choice to growing list of quality replacement keyboards for Android (coming soon to iPhone)

by George Heymann

One product category that has been well represented is replacement Android keyboards. I think I’ve tried practically every keyboard on the market and find myself bouncing back and forth between SwiftkeyX, Swype and Thumb Keyboard 4.

Each keyboard has its strengths, For me, SwifkeyX has the best predictive text engine, Swype the fastest text input and Thumb keyboard 4 the best landscape layout featuring a split keyboard and numeric keypad all on the same screen.

Why do I mention some of TouchPals competitors? Because the TouchPal keyboards latest beta (V4.81) incorporates some of the features from my favorite competing products into one keyboard. CooTek calls this feature TouchPal Curve, which combines swiping input with a predictive text and machine learning engine.
