Is that a large smartphone in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

By now those of you interested in the Galaxy Note, have probably already looked at the phone statistics and any number of reviews. Rather than just give you my initial impressions, What I’d like to do do is to give you some insight on what it’s like to live with the rather large but svelte member of the Samsung family.

There is almost no getting around the fact the phone is large, the Galaxy Note sports a 5.3″ WXGA (1280 x 800, 285 PPI) HD Super Amoled screen. For me the size has been more of an asset than a detriment in day to day use. The extra screen real estate on the Note has made mobile web browsing productive and for the first time for me on a smartphone, enjoyable!

Believe it: Smartphones about to get even smarter

by George Heymann | @techeadlines

Special to the Chieftain

There are now more than 100 million smartphone users in the United States, according to the latest comScore report.

But even as smartphone use increases, the devices are undergoing dramatic — and speedy —evolution. Here’s a look at several prominent mobile trends that are emerging:

  • Smartphones are featuring ever-faster processors, Dual-core processors once reserved for the latest super phones are now standard fare on many smartphones. By the end of 2012, manufacturers will need to include a quad-core processor to be considered a high-end mobile device.
  • Large, high-resolution touchscreens are also in high demand on the latest smartphones and tablets. Not long ago, a 4-inch screen on a smartphone was considered large; today, 4-inch-plus screens are fairly common, with a couple of models topping 5 inches and featuring high-resolution, 1280 x 800 pixel displays. Smartphone Briefs

by Chris Coleman| @PhoneKnack

A new Motorola Android phone has surfaced and we can agree that this is a work of art. The Droid Fighter as it is being called is a 4.6 inch beast.

Reports are surfacing that the Verizon bound Droid Fighter will feature a HD Display and will run on Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich. Something that has been stressed by Motorola has been improved battery life for its upcoming devices. This is pure speculation but we could see a similar battery to that of the Droid RAZR MAXX. We can expect for an official announcement from both Verizon and Motorola in the coming weeks.

Smartphone Briefs

By Chris Coleman|@PhoneKnack

AT&T is hitting the ground running in 2012, opening the year with two Windows Phones. Both the HTC Titan II and the Nokia Lumia 900 are hitting shelves on March 18th. The HTC Titan II can be yours for $199.99 on a new two-year contract. It features a whooping 4.7 inch screen, a 16megapixel camera, 1.5 GHz processor, and will run on AT&T’s LTE(4G) network. The Nokia Lumia 900 on the other hand will be only $99.99 but still gives the Titan II a run for it’s money. The Lumia has a slightly smaller 4.3 inch screen, with a 8megapixel camera on the back, and a 1.4 GHz processor, however, it has a larger battery compared to the Titan II. Like the Titan II, the Lumia is also compatible with AT&T’s LTE(4G) network.

This year is starting off very well for Microsoft and their Windows Phone line, look for them to continue to make a push in the smartphone market throughout the rest of this year
