Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sets all-time record for the biggest entertainment launch with more than $400 million in North America and UK sales alone

Shattering its own day-one sales records, Activision Publishing, a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, announced that its highly-anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has become the biggest entertainment launch ever with an estimated sell-through of more than $400 million and more than 6.5 million units in North America and the United Kingdoalone in the first 24 hours of its release, according to Chart track and retail customer sell-through information.

This marks the third consecutive year that the Call of Duty franchise has set day one launch records across all forms of entertainment, something no other entertainment franchise in any medium has ever accomplished. Last year, in North America and the United Kingdom, Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops had estimated day-one sell-through of $360 million and in 2009, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, set day-one records with estimated sell through of $310 million, according to Chart track and retail customer sell-through information.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, 2011’s most anticipated game, available now

After a year of anticipation, after the breakout success of the first-ever Call of Duty XP live fan event, and after pre-order numbers that toppled even those of 2010′s mega-seller Call of Duty: Black Ops, the ultimate shot has at last been fired.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is now available at retail worldwide. Also launched alongside MW3, was the revolutionary new social gaming network Call of Duty Elite, conceived expressly to help Call of Duty’s 30 million devoted fans Play Together Better.

Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 kicked off its worldwide invasion at midnight as gamers crashed launch parties at over 13,000 retailers from Sydney to London to New York City, intent on being among the first to pull the trigger on the title dubbed “the most anticipated video game in history” by GameStop’s Senior Vice President of Merchandising, Bob McKenzie.

Steve Jobs: in remembrance of things futuristic

By all accounts Steve Jobs was one of those rare people who saw the future. He somehow knew what the future held for people, especially when it came to technology.

Many – including President Barack Obama – have called him a “visionary” in their tributes after learning of his death last night night at the age of 56 after many years of suffering from pancreatic cancer.

“By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity,” said the President.

Video game popularity spurs increased demand for game degree programs

The number of programs in video game design, development and programming continues to rise at American colleges, universities, art and trade schools across the country. According to new research from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), American colleges and universities will offer 343 programs in game design, development and programming, including 301 undergraduate and 42 graduate programs, during the 2011-12 academic year.

“It is encouraging to see so many institutions of higher learning preparing students for careers in our creative and high-tech industry,” said Rich Taylor, senior vice president for communications and industry affairs at the ESA, the trade association representing U.S. computer and video game publishers.
