BlackBerry Bold 9790 versus Sony Xperia S

by Simon Drew

As the growth of the smartphone market in the UK continues, and devices get faster, more powerful and better looking, it is inevitable that manufacturers will see 2012 as an opportunity to improve their position in the market. Smartphones increased their grip over the UK consumer in 2011 with headline-grabbing devices like the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Apple’s iPhone 4S generating excitement and enthusiasm. Though while there is growth for some manufacturers, others might lose out.

Research in Motion, the makers of Blackberry and Sony, while both still incredibly influential and successful in the market, have lost out to more popular competitors. Both manufacturers have started 2012 with new devices aimed at launching new ranges which can be seen as an injection for both brands. At RIM it is the Blackberry Bold 9790 which leads the way as the latest handset in its Bold series. It is due to be released at the end of this month At Sony it is the newly launched Xperia S which is the first in a new NXT Xperia range. That handset is due to be launched at the end of January and then released in early March. So which one is best?

The Sony Xperia S is an important one for the technology giant. It is the first of their smartphones to be released without the Ericsson name. Therefore the firm needs to make an impression. The Xperia S seems to harness that renewed sense of ambition as it is a definite step ahead of the rest of the Xperia range like the Arc and Play. Powered by a dual core 1.5 GHz processor the device will be fast, nimble is the word Sony has used to emphasise how easy it will be to launch and use different applications. The display on the 4.3 inch Sony Bravia screen is LED backlit and high-res so anything viewed on the device will look good. Along with that a 12 megapixel camera with autofocus and an estimated 1.5 second lag time from launch to shot suggests the processor will be making this a good device to snap away with.

The Xperia S launches with Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread, a disappointment for some who might have been expecting it to launch with Android 4.0 Ice Cream sandwich, however Sony has already suggested the device will get an update in the second quarter of this year along with the rest of the Xperia range, it could even coincide with the release of the Xperia S.

The BlackBerry Bold 9790 will be one of the best RIM devices for a while. Combining BlackBerry’s traditional QWERTY keyboard with a touchscreen it offers the best of both worlds. Powered by a dual core 1 GHz processor it will be quick, but perhaps not as quick as the Xperia S. It has 8GB of memory but this is some way below the 32 GB on board storage offered by the Sony device. It comes with a 5 megapixel camera that comes with autofocus and an LED flash. Its video resolution is 640 x 480 pixels which means it won’t rival the Sony Xperia S in the terms of HD. It is also disappointing in that most of the cameras on the smartphone market are increasingly 8 megapixels.

Once sense in which it might outrun the Xperia S is in terms of operating system. The 9790 comes with BlackBerry OS 7.0 which has been described as neat and efficient, ensuring a quick reaction as well as a clear interface.

Although the Blackberry Bold 9790 might not be as powerful or as quick, with the same features as the Sony Xperia S it is still an impressive device that will undoubtedly prove popular in its target business market, which has long proved a successful strategy for RIM with their mobile phone deals. The Xperia is a superior device. Whether the ICS update will help it run even better remains to be seen but any device launching in 2012 will, so far, have this as its benchmark.
