Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos had four new product announcements today including the rumored and highly anticipated color Android tablet the Kindle Fire.

The Kindle Fire will feature a TI Omap4 dual-core processor, 8GB of internal storage, 7-inch ultra-wide Gorilla Glass multi-touch IPS display (better viewing angles) with 1024×600 resolution, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a pair of top-mounted stereo speakers for $199. The physical dimension of the tablet are 7.5×4.7x.45, weighs less than a pound (14.6 oz) and will support Flash. The Fire, like first generation iPads will not include a camera.

Amazons plans for the new Kindle Fire tablet are far more ambitious than than previous generation e-book readers. The Fire will incorporate all of Amazons web services, Amazon Kindle, Amazon Instant Video, Amazon MP3, The Amazon App Store as well as Amazon Prime.

The $79/year Amazon Prime service benefits include free two-day shipping as well as access to its unlimited instant video streaming service. Amazons media offerings with the help of media partners: CBS, NBC, Universal, and most recently Fox has grown to 11,000 movies and TV shows available to Prime customers.

The Android tablet will incorporate a skinned version of the Android OS that Amazon claims to have “painted over the rough surfaces” of Android with its own more accessible user interface (UI).

Bezos also touted ‘Silk’ which he described as a “lightning-fast web browser” running on Amazons EC2 cloud computing engine. Bezos explained that ‘Silk’ splits the workload between the Fire tablet and Amazons servers to optimize the browsing experience. Whispersync – a bookmarking technology that automatically syncs bookmarks between devices has also been updated to work with movies and TV shows.

So you can start watching on one device and pick up where you left on another, nice touch.

“We are offering premium products at non-premium prices” Bezos said adding that other tablet contenders have just sold a piece of hardware, “We don’t think of the Kindle as a tablet. We think of it as a service”.

Despite the lack of a camera, microphone or 3G service, at less than half the price of the lowest cost WiFi only iPad, and the addition of the Amazon media tie-ins the Kindle Fire could emerge as the first Android tablet to pose a real threat to iPad dominance in the burgeoning tablet market.

The Kindle Fire is available for pre-order today with delivery expected around November 15.

Along with the Fire, the Amazon announcement included three 6” E-ink Kindles starting at just $79.00. The $79 Kindle which uses a 5-way controller for navigation, weighs less than 6 ounces and includes 2GB of storage. There will also be two Kindle Touch models that feature multi-touch E-ink displays, include 4GB of storage and weigh in under 8 ounces. The WiFi only Kindle Touch is $99 and the 3G plus WiFi model will be $149.00 (with special offers/ad supported). All three E-ink models are available for pre-order now with delivery expected around November 21.
