Netflix announce today that they will be separating its streaming and DVD services in the US. The new 1 DVD out-at-a-time plan will be $7.99 and the 2 DVD out-at-a-time plan will be $11.99. The unlimited streaming only plan will remain at $7.99 a month. The price for getting both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99) up from the current $9.99 pricing.
“Netflix members love watching instantly, but we’ve come to recognize there is still a very large continuing demand for DVDs by mail,” said Andy Rendich, Netflix Chief Service and Operations Officer. “By better reflecting the underlying costs and offering our lowest prices ever for unlimited DVD, we hope to provide a great value to our current and future DVD-by-mail members.”
Despite its statement to the contrary the new pricing will force many users to choose one plan or another rather than pay the increase cost of having to subscribe and pay full price separately for each plan.
I’m currently on the combined streaming and DVD plan and will most likely switch to the streaming only option and rely on Redbox for DVDs.
The pricing will become effective immediately for new subscribers. Existing members will have to September 1st to weigh their options before the new pricing takes effect.

The price is just right at the moment
ED: I agree, I’m disappointed Netflix chose to change their plans and raise its prices.
