Canalys published its fourth-quarter smartphone market data report which revealed that Google’s Android has become the leading global smartphone platform. Canalys data showed that Google had shipped 33.3 million units in Q4 2010 growing at an impressive 615% rate for the quarter.
Nokia came in second with 31 million units followed by Apple at 16.2 million and Rim with 14.6 million. Microsoft registered a modest 3.1 million units just slightly ahead of the combined “others” category which rounded out the report with 3.0 million units shipped.
Interestingly HTC and Samsung accounted for nearly 45% of Google OS-based handset sales in a very crowded field.
