National Do Not Call Registry

With the flood of political calls in the run-up to the mid-term elections, along with telemarketers, the National Do Not Call Registry (NDNCR) is bound to come to mind. If you are not familiar with the NDNCR, placement of your number on this list will stop most telemarketing calls. Unfortunately, the registry does not halt surveys, political solicitations or requests from charitable organizations.

Registration is simple and straightforward. Go to https://donotcall.gov and click on “register a phone number.”

  1. Enter up to three phone numbers and your email address.
  2. Check for errors. Click “submit.”
  3. Check your email for a message from Register@donotcall.gov. Open the email and click on the link to complete your registration.

Once you register, your phone number will show up on the registry the next day. Telemarketers have 31 days from the date you register to stop calling you. You can verify your registration online at www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222.

Telephone numbers on the registry will only be removed when they are disconnected or reassigned, or when the consumer chooses to remove a number from the registry.
If you decide you want to remove your number — although I can’t imagine why you would — you can call toll-free 1-888-382-1212 from the telephone number you want to delete from the registry.

If you receive a lot of telemarketing calls at inopportune times, the NDNCR should help give you peace of mind as well as peace and quiet.
