Google’s “a couple of cool new mobile features” event!

Google greatly expanded voice control on the Android platform. Before you say well that’s been done before take a closer look at the list of the current voice actions available now.

  • Send text messages: Say “send text to [recipient] [message]*”
  • Listen to music: Say “listen to [artist/song/album]
  • Get directions: Say “navigate to [address/city/business name]
  • Call businesses: Say “call [business name] [location]*”
  • Call contacts: Say “call [contact name] [phone type]*”
  • Send email: Say “send email to [recipient] [subject]* [body]*”
  • View a map: Say “map of [address/city]”
  • Go to websites: Say “go to [website]
  • Write a note: Say “note to self [message]”
  • Search Google: Say “[your query]”

What’s more intriguing about these voice search actions is that there not limited to content that is stored on the phone locally. The voice actions can also be applied to anything on the web. I’ve been playing around with the new voice search app since I get home from work. I have to admit that I can see how this will add functionality to Android handsets. Caveat in order to use some of the voice actions you may have download updates to some of your installed apps to make them compatible with the voice commands. When this happens the voice search app will prompt you to update.

Google is hosting an event tomorrow August 12th to unveil what they’re calling “a couple of cool new mobile features.” Rumors have run the gamut from launching their Android Market web interface to the announcement of their enhanced music store that features music streaming.

Perhaps it’s Googles response to Qik, Fring and Facetime with an official Google video chat app for Android? Maybe even something totally new and unexpected related to one of their acquisitions?

It’s fun to speculate but the truth is only Google knows for sure! What do you think Google will be announcing?
